HLPFI reviews the five entries that made it onto this year’s Environment Award shortlist, sponsored by Fracht Group.

For this award, our judges were looking for a company that has shown a considered approach to environmental concerns through either an initiative launched in the past 12 months, or within the day-to-day running of operations in the past 12 months and the long-term strategy of the organisation.

Our shortlist for the Environment Award at the Heavy Lift Awards 2023:

Blue Water Shipping

Blue Water Shipping Heavy Lift Awards

Blue Water Shipping showcased its role in a pioneering carbon capture and storage (CCS) project in the North Sea, providing transport and logistics services while meeting requirements never seen before. Our judges commended its work on what it described as “one of the most highly anticipated future solutions for reducing CO2”, and one that “shows a strong progression in our industry”.

Grimaldi Group

Grimaldi Heavy Lift Awards

Grimaldi Group has long stood out for its strong focus on environmental issues, which in recent years has resulted in important investments aimed at reducing harmful emissions from its operations. The company’s “impressive portfolio of positive environmental change for the better”, as one of our judges described, include retrofit programmes, the development of eco-friendly vessel concepts, and the installation of solar panels and wind turbines in the group’s terminals.

Logistec Stevedoring

Logistec Heavy Lift Awards

Logistec’s submission was commended for demonstrating the company’s “concerted effort to be environmentally aware”. It showed how environmental concerns are factored into operational activities. From its development and implementation of an Environmental Management System, investments in low-emission equipment and technology, and industry-leading participation in environmental programmes, Logistec has indeed put environmental concerns at the forefront of its activities.

Sarens

Sarens Heavy Lift Awards

Sarens put forward “an entry full of achievements, objectives, and commitment”, said our judges. It showcased the company’s deeply embedded sense of environmental responsibility that extends from heavy activities on the jobsite to riding bicycles to work. Sarens’ vision to accelerate the transition to green energies has seen the launch of the Sarens Sustainability Accelerator initiative, brining smarter engineering and cleaner opportunities to the market and in its day-to-day activities.

These include energy efficiency initiatives, exploring alternative fuel options and optimising routes and operations. Notably, as part of its strategic goals, Wallenius Wilhelmsen is committed to introduce one net-zero emission end-to-end service by 2027. In addition, it has set an ambitious goal to reduce its carbon intensity in shipping by 27.5 percent by 2030, compared to 2019 levels.
