The 129 m-long hull was launched into the River Mersey last month. Once launched, four tugs from Kotug Smit’s fleet - Smit Barbados, Smit Waterloo, Smit Belgie and Smit Sandon - towed the hull to the basin for the next stages of construction.

Paul Murphy, towage operator at Kotug Smit Towage in Liverpool, was responsible for the preparations and coordination between the tugs during the launching operation. He explained that, prior to the launch, special ropes were manufactured for the operation.

The polar research ship is scheduled to come into operation in 2019.
